The Heart Behind Chatman J Cakes

EVERY GREAT BAKERY HAS A STORY. THIS IS OURS…

Some of life's sweetest memories begin around the table—a birthday celebration, a Sunday dinner, a family reunion, or a neighbor dropping by for dessert. For Harlem native Jean Chatman, baking has never been just about cake. It's about bringing people together, creating lasting memories, and watching someone smile after the very first bite. That simple joy became the heart of Chatman J Cakes.

Jean's journey began with a simple act of sharing. In 2013, she discovered her passion for baking while making homemade cakes for family and friends. One day, her cousin took several of her cakes to a neighborhood senior center, where the response was immediate. Residents wanted to know who baked the cakes, asked for more, and encouraged Jean to continue doing what she loved. That unexpected moment planted the seed for a dream.

Later that year, Jean officially launched Chatman J Sweets. As the business grew and customers came to know her for her cakes, the brand evolved into Chatman J Cakes—a name that better reflected what people loved most. And yes, the "J" stands for Jean.

Inspired by Family

Although Jean discovered her passion for baking in 2013, her love for homemade desserts began much earlier. She fondly remembers her grandmother, whose homemade pies and biscuits brought family together and filled the home with warmth. Those cherished memories continue to inspire every cake, pie, and dessert she creates today.

After retiring from a successful career in housing management, Jean devoted herself to the passion she discovered in 2013—creating handcrafted desserts that bring families, friends, and communities together.

Award-Winning Flavor

Jean's dedication to quality quickly earned recognition. Within just three years of launching her business, she received First Place, Second Place, and Fan Favorite honors at the Harlem Parks Department Bake-Off. Her award-winning Zucchini Bread earned First Place, while her Sweet Potato Cheesecake became a Fan Favorite. Today, customers also return again and again for her famous Pistachio Cake.

Serving smiles, one sweet bite at a time

One memorable chapter in Jean's journey came during the COVID-19 pandemic, when actor Kelly AuCoin, a cast member of Billions, purchased multiple cakes to boost morale for the cast and crew. Jean personally delivered the cakes to both his home and the production set, sharing comfort, joy, and a little sweetness.

More than a decade after discovering her passion for baking, Jean is proud that Chatman J Cakes has continued to thrive through the pandemic and economic challenges. Every order represents another opportunity to bring people together and create lasting memories.

As Jean often says,

"If you gotta add calories, make it worth it!"
